FC Liverpool vs Inter Milan
Here we go, the Champions League starts again, and first match is Liverpool vs Inter Milan.
Overview: Liverpool were doing badly in the Premier League (5th place 19 points behind leader), however their European Competition seems to be going quite well. Inter Milan however, are first in Italy Serie A, without losing a single match this season. They are probably going to win the Italian Serie, and are looking to expand their run in Europe.
Starting Line-Ups:
Liverpool: Reina, Finnan, Carragher, Hyypia, Aurelio, Gerrard, Mascherano, Lucas, Babel, Kuyt, and Torres. Subs: Itandje, Riise, Benayoun, Alonso, Crouch, Pennant, Arbeloa
Inter Milan: Julio Cesar, Maicon, Cordoba, Materazzi, Chivu, Zanetti, Stankovic, Cambiasso, Maxwell, Cruz, and Ibrahimovic. Subs: Toldo, Figo, Vieira, Burdisso, Crespo, Maniche, Suazo.
The Game started off surprisingly well for Liverpool. They played professionally, delivering good passes, and kept the ball.
The first chance came on the 5th minute as Gerrard was fouled, edge of the box, by left-back Chivu. It seems the defense is not taking any chances with him. Aurelio shoots but misses. The next 10 minutes did not present any solid chances, however Liverpool were surprisingly dominating and Inter couldn’t get out of their own half, and Materazzi got a yellow.
On the 16th minute, came Inters first chance, as Ibrahimovic almost broke through the defense.
Mascherano had an exceptionally good opening first 25 minutes, as he continuously handles the Inter forwards. On the 29th minute, Materazzi booked again! He’s sent off for tugging down Torres, and Inter down to 10 men for an hour.
The next 15 minutes were pretty much equal, neither side creating solid chances. Half ended 0-0.
After the restart, both teams attempted to create more chances with long shooting and passing, however neither was working particularly well. On the 58 minute came Liverpools best chance. After a poor clearance by the Inter defense, the ball deflected off Kuyt through the defense to Torres, who was one v one, however Cesar made a great save for a corner. The corner is taken and finds Hyypia who seems sure to score…however he heads wide. 2 great chances for Liverpool.
On the 65 minute, Crouch replaces Lucas, it seems that Liverpool want to play more attackingly.
For the next 15 minutes, Liverpool started putting the pressure on Inter, whipping crosses in from Gerrard, Aurelio, and Babel, and creating chances through Kuyt, Torres, and Crouch.
On the 84 minute came the first goal!!! Kuyt finds space at back post after poor Inter defending, and gets the ball. He controls is with his chest, and then shoots a volley into the ground which jumps over Cesar. Anfield goes wild. 1-0, Liverpool Lead.
Liverpool started putting on even more pressure, and got a second goal. Gerrard, on the 89th minute, from 20 yards, got a pass, and controlled the ball, shot a great shot on the ground into the far post, 2-0, Liverpool lead.
The whistle blew, and what an answer to their critics!
Liverpool defeat Inter Milan 2-0.
